Canada Post, Purolator, UPS or FedEx: which carrier is right for your ecommerce store?

To choose an ecommerce shipping carrier in Canada, compare the full cost and the service delivered across a sample of your orders. Canada Post, Purolator, UPS and FedEx offer several service levels. The best option for a compact parcel going to a major city will not necessarily be the same for a bulky product, a remote destination or an urgent delivery.

Your decision should also account for pickup, departure times, tracking and incident handling. A rate advantage can lose its value if it increases manual work or prevents you from meeting the delivery promise shown in your store.

Services to include in your comparison

This table identifies services to assess. It does not rank carriers by price or reliability.

Carrier Service families to review What to check in your quote
Canada Post Regular Parcel, Xpresspost and Priority; business services available through your account. Eligible service, delivery standard, coverage and included options.
Purolator Purolator Ground and Purolator Express services. Availability by destination, delivery time and guarantee conditions.
UPS UPS Standard and express services available for the route. Rate zone, fuel surcharge, additional charges and delivery options.
FedEx FedEx Ground and FedEx Express services. Transit time by postal code, billable weight, surcharges and service conditions.

Check current Canadian service offerings

Service names alone are not enough to compare two quotes. Check the current Canadian terms, then request the price applicable to your account and route. Official resources can help you prepare:

Also check operational notices when planning departures. A transit estimate, an announced delivery date and a contractual money-back guarantee are three different things.

Build a sample that reflects your sales

Export a representative period of orders, keeping postal codes, packed weight, external dimensions, value and selected service. Remove personal information that is unnecessary for the simulation. If sales are seasonal, assess a peak period as well.

Group shipments into profiles: small parcels, multi-product orders, bulky formats, urban destinations, remote areas and the US. Do not let a majority of small parcels hide the few orders that are very expensive.

Ask each carrier to price the same profiles with comparable departure dates. Specify signature requirements, delivery constraints and the coverage you need. Comparing different options produces an apparent saving rather than a usable decision.

Compare invoiced amounts, not just the base rate

Record the base price, fuel surcharge, residential charges where applicable, remote-area fees, dimension adjustments and options. Include pickups and address corrections if your agreement charges for them separately.

Dimensions are especially important for lightweight, bulky products. FedEx explains that dimensional weight can determine billable weight. Measure the closed parcel with its protective materials, not just the product. Our ecommerce packaging guide shows how to compare two formats.

Illustrative example: a $10 base rate plus $5 in applicable charges totals $15. Another offer with a $12 base rate and $2 in charges totals $14. If the services are comparable, the second is cheaper for this profile. Then check that actual billing confirms the assumptions.

Assess delivery times and service on your own routes

Track carrier handoff, the first visible acceptance scan and delivery. Separate preparation delays from delays after dispatch: changing carriers does not fix an order that has already spent two days waiting at the dock.

For each profile, measure the share of orders delivered within the stated timeframe, incidents and customer service requests. Use enough shipments to interpret differences. Two incidents out of ten shipments warrant investigation; they do not, by themselves, prove that an entire network is less reliable.

Also review returns: ease of label creation, accessible drop-off points for your customers, parcel tracking and receipt at the right address. The cost of a successful delivery should not obscure the cost of reverse logistics.

Plan more than one shipping rule

A store can use one standard service for most orders and another for urgent shipments, certain formats or specific areas. Keep the rules manageable for your team. Automatic selection is only useful when weight, dimensions and destination data are reliable.

Prepare a backup before you need it: an active account, tested labels, confirmed pickup and clear instructions. Also check compatibility with your ecommerce integrations and the flow of tracking information back to your store.

When using a 3PL, ask how services are selected, how surcharges are passed on and who handles claims. Assess Kolineo’s transport solutions in this context, using your volumes and destinations. For US shipments, include the cost and arrangements for customs clearance.

Frequently asked questions

Which shipping carrier is cheapest in Canada?

There is no answer that applies to every store. Dimensions, weight, postal codes, service and the pricing agreement change the result. Compare a representative period of orders, including surcharges.

Should you work with just one carrier?

One network simplifies operations, while multiple options may better serve different formats, areas and urgent needs. Choose a level of complexity that your team and tools can manage properly.

How should you compare delivery promises?

Request the transit time for the specific route, check cutoffs and service conditions, then measure results. Do not turn a general estimate into the same promise for every customer.
