10 benefits of a 3PL for growing brands
Contents 14 sections
A 3PL takes over the receiving, storage, picking, packing and shipping of your orders, so you don’t have to run a warehouse yourself. For a growing ecommerce or wholesale brand, the benefits of a 3PL go well beyond floor space: lower shipping rates, faster delivery, fewer errors, better technology and, above all, more time to grow the business.
Below are the ten benefits we see most often when brands outsource their fulfillment, with examples from our operations in Sherbrooke, Québec, and Chicago. We close with the trade-offs, because a good decision weighs both sides.
What a 3PL actually does
A 3PL (third-party logistics provider) runs some or all of your logistics on your behalf. Your inventory is received and stored in its warehouse. When a shopper orders from your store or a retailer sends a purchase order, the 3PL picks the items, packs the parcel or builds the pallet, labels it and hands it to the carrier.
You still own your inventory and your customer relationships. The 3PL supplies the space, the team, the equipment, the warehouse management system and the carrier contracts. For a full definition, including how a 3PL differs from a 2PL or a 4PL, read our guide What is a 3PL?
1. Fixed costs become variable costs
Running your own warehouse means paying for a lease, racking, a forklift, label printers, insurance and payroll, whether you ship 100 orders this month or 2,000. With a 3PL, the bill follows your activity: you pay to receive your pallets, for the space you actually use and for each order shipped.
Turning fixed costs into variable ones protects your cash flow in slow months and frees up capital for inventory and marketing. To see what this looks like with your own volumes, try our 3PL cost calculator.
2. Lower, negotiated shipping rates
Shipping is often the largest line in ecommerce logistics, and a single small brand has little leverage with carriers. A 3PL pools the volume of all its clients, which unlocks rates that one company rarely gets on its own.
Kolineo clients save 28% on shipping on average. We work with Canada Post, Purolator, UPS, FedEx, DHL, GLS, USPS, Nationex, XPO and Groupe Robert, so each shipment can go with the right carrier for its weight, destination and delivery window. See our shipping services.
3. Faster order turnaround
Your customers compare your delivery times with those of the biggest online retailers. A 3PL organizes its whole day around shipping: orders are picked, packed and handed to carriers on scheduled pickups.
Kolineo commits to shipping orders the same day, and 99.87% of orders leave our warehouse on time. Within Canada, customers generally receive their parcels in 2 to 5 business days, depending on the region. An in-house setup, where one or two people pack orders between other tasks, struggles to keep that pace once sales take off.
4. Fewer picking errors
A wrong order is expensive: reshipping the right item, paying for shipping twice, customer service time and sometimes a bad review. A 3PL reduces errors with standardized processes, barcode scanning at each step and a warehouse management system (WMS) that tells pickers exactly what to pick and where.
Our order accuracy rate is 99.98%: out of 10,000 orders picked and packed, only two need to be corrected. For a brand, that precision translates directly into happier customers and fewer returns.
5. Space that flexes with your seasons
Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the holidays can send your inventory and order volume soaring within a few weeks. In-house, that means renting temporary space, hiring and training seasonal staff, then scaling everything back down in January.
A 3PL absorbs those swings. You use more pallet positions or shelf locations in peak season and fewer the rest of the year, without signing a multi-year lease. Kolineo offers several storage options, on pallets or on shelves, so you pay for the space that actually fits your products.
6. Technology you don’t have to buy
A WMS, integrations with your sales channels, barcode scanners and tracking tools add up to a significant investment for a small or mid-sized business. With a 3PL, they come with the service.
Kolineo connects to Shopify, WooCommerce, Amazon, BigCommerce, Magento, eBay, Squarespace and ShipStation: orders flow automatically to the warehouse, and tracking numbers flow back to your store. You can check inventory levels, order status and ongoing operations from your phone or computer. Every connection is listed on our integrations page.
7. A trained team without the hiring headaches
Finding, training and keeping warehouse staff takes time, especially when volume changes from month to month. Sick days, vacations and volume spikes quickly become your problem.
With a 3PL, the partner’s team receives, stores, picks and ships. It knows packing best practices, carrier requirements and the pitfalls of poorly documented inbound shipments. You still have a single point of contact: at Kolineo, a dedicated customer service team follows your account day to day.
8. Easier access to major retailers
Selling to retailers like Walmart, Costco or Sobeys means following strict rules: compliant labels, specific pallet builds, delivery appointments and shipping documents. Mistakes can lead to refused deliveries or compliance chargebacks.
A 3PL that already ships to these chains knows their requirements. Kolineo ships to retailers including Walmart, Costco, Sobeys, Amazon, Avril, Jean Coutu, Loblaws, Staples (Bureau en Gros), Sam’s Club, Renaud-Bray, Archambault and Lowe’s. Our B2B fulfillment page explains how we prepare those orders.
9. A gateway to the rest of Canada and the U.S.
Cross-border selling comes with longer transit times, higher shipping costs and customs clearance. A 3PL with warehouses on both sides of the border makes expansion much simpler, whether you are a Canadian brand moving into the U.S. or an American brand entering Canada.
Alongside its Sherbrooke warehouse, Kolineo operates a warehouse near Chicago. You run both markets with one team, one system and one structure, with inventory closer to your customers on each side. Kolineo also coordinates imports and customs clearance. See our Chicago-area warehouse.
10. Time to grow your business
The last benefit is often the most valuable. Every hour spent packing boxes, booking trucks or counting stock is an hour taken away from product development, sales and marketing.
A 3PL gives you that time back. It can also take over tasks that eat into your week, such as returns processing, kitting and product customization. That is the idea behind full logistics outsourcing: you focus on selling, we take care of the rest.
The trade-offs, honestly
A 3PL is not the right answer for every business. Before you sign, keep these points in mind:
- Less hands-on control. You no longer see your products every day. The relationship depends on real-time visibility and good communication with your partner.
- An invoice you need to understand. Receiving, storage, pick and pack, packaging, returns: every 3PL structures its fees differently. Compare quotes on the same basis; our article on fulfillment costs in Canada breaks down each line.
- A transition to plan. Moving inventory, connecting your store and documenting packing rules takes a few weeks of preparation.
- Highly specialized products. If your products require very specific handling, confirm the 3PL can actually support it before you commit.
In-house logistics vs. a 3PL at a glance
| Factor | In-house | With a 3PL |
|---|---|---|
| Costs | Mostly fixed: lease, equipment, payroll | Mostly variable: per pallet, per order |
| Shipping | Rates based on your volume alone | Rates negotiated on many clients’ volume |
| Peak season | Temporary space and seasonal hires | Capacity adjusted by the partner |
| Technology | WMS and integrations to buy and maintain | Included in the service |
| Staffing | Hiring, training, coverage | Handled by the 3PL’s team |
| Expansion | Open a new warehouse | Use an existing network (Sherbrooke and Chicago, for example) |
| Control | Direct, on site | Remote, through the portal and your account team |
Benefits of a 3PL: common questions
When does a 3PL start to make sense?
There is no universal threshold. A 3PL becomes worth considering when logistics takes more of your time than it should, when errors or shipping costs keep rising, or when you run out of space. Our article on outsourcing logistics lists the signs to watch for.
Do I lose control of my inventory?
No. You still own your products, and you can see inventory levels and order status in real time from your phone or computer. You decide on replenishment, packing rules and priorities.
Can one 3PL handle both my online orders and my retail orders?
Yes, that is what omnichannel fulfillment means. Kolineo picks and packs ecommerce (B2C) orders and retail (B2B) orders from the same inventory.
How much does a 3PL cost?
It depends on your order volume, product size and the services you use. For a first range, use our 3PL cost calculator, then request a detailed quote.
Does my 3PL need to be close to my customers?
Proximity helps, but the quality of the carrier network matters just as much. From Sherbrooke, Kolineo serves Québec, Ontario and Eastern Canada; from Chicago, it serves your U.S. customers.
